நம சிவாய 

Namah Shivaya

This Five letter Word is a very significant mantra chanted all through the years across India in Hindu community. Today I am astonished to get to know the real meaning of this Mantra. Our ancestors are so intellectual that they did not coined any word in random. This word is a utter proof for that.

ந -> தீரோத  மலம் 
ம -> ஆணவ மலம் 
சி -> சிவன் 
வா ->அருள் 

ய -> ஆன்ம 

ந -> தீரோத  மலம் 

According Saiva doctrines, Every human in this world is bonded and which prevents them from enjoying the real freedom and infinite happiness as showered by mother nature. They classified these bonds as தீரோத  மலம்  and ஆணவ மலம் .  Only when one get rid of these bonds, one can feel the ecstasy of liberation called as Mukthi(முக்தி ). Mukthi is attaining super conscious state and being in absolute liberation and integrating with nature.

Saiva doctrines saying தீரோத  மலம்   is intentionally created by God to kick us out of this birth and death cycle and creates us urge to search for the real pure self. தீரோத  மலம்  is God's Games.(திருவிளையாடல் )

ஆணவ மலம் is egoism.

ம -> ஆணவ மலம் 

Using this தீரோத  மலம்  one should get rid of the ஆணவ மலம்  .

சி -> சிவன் 

Shiva is the single supreme God who governs the whole world and creations.

வா ->திரு  அருள் 

It is Shiva's Arul. அன்பு is love we offer to the near and closed ones. Whereas அருள்  is greater than அன்பு and it is global love towards every creation in this world.

ய -> ஆன்ம 

ஆன்ம Every living being in this world. 

பொருள் (Meaning)

(யா ) என்கிற ஆன்மா,  (நா ) என்ற திரோதா மலத்தினாலே,  ( ம ) என்ற ஆணவ மலத்தை அழித்து,  ( வா ) என்ற இறைவனுடைய திரு அருள் துணை கொண்டு ( சி ) என்ற சிவத்தை அடைய வேண்டும் .

சீவன்(induviudal) சிவனாக வேண்டும் ! சீவனிலுள்ளே  உள்ள களிம்பு (மலம்) நீங்கினால் சீவன் சிவன் ஆகும் .

Another unique comparison of this is to that of a coconut, Only after the outer tender green shell(கன்மம் ) is removed and the inner hard shell(ஆணவம் ) is removed,  One can enjoy the nector of happiness inside. சீவன் (induvidual) can become சிவன் . i.e attain mukthi. 

To remember this and reinforce this thought of liberation, it has become a custom to bring the coconut while visiting temples.!
